I feel like I say this almost every month but didn’t August pass quickly? August is a busy month for us because Andy spends lots of time at school getting his classroom ready for a new year. I spent a couple afternoons up there helping him and it was nice to save him some time as we worked together. We are two perfectionistic teachers so we think alike when it comes to preparing classrooms!
My shopping and menu planning were a bit scattered in August. Honestly, my mother-in-law and I are still getting used to sharing a kitchen, a refrigerator and our menu planning. We are trying to take turns cooking dinner in the evenings so we can share expenses and save each other some time. It’s a great plan but we both feel like we’re struggling to get back in the grove of menu planning. Maybe September will be easier?
Here are the totals of my shopping trips for August. I stayed under my $260 budget this month so that was good!
- 8/3 Meijer $12.23
- 8/4 Aldi $17.62
- 8/9 Kroger $32.25
- 8/14 Meijer $49.78
- 8/16 Aldi $30.40
- 8/22 Meijer $10.05
- 8/24 Meijer $34.39
- 8/24 Bulk Food Store $7.39
- 8/24 Walgreens $2.52
- 8/26 Fresh Thyme $22.77
- 8/28 Kroger $18.24
- Total $237.64
Some of the highlights of August shopping included great diaper deals! Here’s some highlights of August for you.
Thanks to my Fitbit, I have been earning free rewards at Walgreens this past year. (Here’s how I automatically earn money with my Fitbit. It’s so simple and so amazing!) I stopped by Walgreens to use a $5 reward that was set to expire soon. The diapers weren’t on sale but they were something Emma needed. Thanks to my reward, I only spent $2.52 for a package of diapers. That’s a great deal!
I stopped at our local Amish bulk food store and stocked up on chai tea mix. I’ve tried a lot of other chai teas and this is the only one I like. It tastes good on a cold morning and helps me get some milk. It was actually 20% off the day I went and I wish I had bought more. Ha. I spent $7.39 on chai tea that day.
Here’s an example of one of my more random Meijer trips. I didn’t use a list and picked up a couple of the $1 deals that caught my eye. I did pick up a big box of Huggies wipes that was on clearance for $10. It ended up being less than a $1 a package so I went ahead and grabbed a box. I spent $49.78 on this trip. Not pictured were 2 big bottles of Meijer vitamins that were on sale, buy 1, get 1 free. A good deal, but those vitamins and the wipes bumped my total up for that trip.
I actually shopped at Fresh Thyme this month. I don’t often shop there but sometimes their sales are especially good. That was the case this time when I picked up blueberries for $1.25 a pint. I never saw them at $0.99 this year around us. That was a disappointment. I also picked up 85% ground lean hamburger for $1.79/lb and boneless skinless chicken breasts for $1.89/lb. Like I said, it was a worthwhile trip and I spent $22.77 at Fresh Thyme.
So there you have it. There’s a peek into my August shopping totals. I’m hoping that September will be the month I really get back into the swing of menu planning again. Any one else struggle with that at various points of the year? Life is so much easier when I do menu plan, but some weeks, it just doesn’t happen the way I want it to. Do you have any good meal planning tips for me?
