Back to School Stumbles

School starts on Monday for this teacher! My summer is officially drawing to a close. It’s been a wonderful summer but all good things must come to an end. Truly, I do love teaching and am excited to meet all my new students.

School is obviously on my mind so I thought it would be fun to share some of the neat school ideas I’ve stumbled upon over the past couple weeks.

Sprik Space created a very cool Alphabet Mosaic using free Flickr pictures. Isn’t this a great idea? If you don’t have time to create one of your own, you can print hers!

Here’s another printable, specifically geared to school. Sweet Coconut Lime created this School Days Printable.

I’ve seen these pencil vases before and think they are absolutely beautiful! What teacher wouldn’t love one of these? Amanda Parker shares a tutorial to make your own Teacher Pencil Vase.

Of course, if you don’t want to make your vase, you can take an empty Ball jar and fill it with alphabet letters and flowers. Giggles Galore shows you how to create this simple letter gift.

Finally, the Crafting Chicks have a cute candy bar wrapper for your teacher. A nice note with a chocolate bar? This teacher is sold!

With thoughts of these cute projects in my head, I’ll be welcoming my cute third graders come Monday!

Lutheran Schools Week Activities

It’s been a busy week – even for me! I don’t have any Saturday Stumbles to share since I haven’t been online much, so thought I’d share what I’ve been up to this week.

Somehow, I ended up being in charge of this week with my friend and fellow teacher, Tonya. If I may say so myself, I thought we did a lovely job! We were responsible for all the Lutheran Schools Week activities as well as Grandparents Day on Wednesday. As if that wasn’t busy enough, my class was the one to host the soup supper on Ash Wednesday so I had to coordinate that.

Monday was patriotic day. It was a good start to our Lutheran Schools Week.

Tuesday found me dressing up with my kids for occupation day. What do I want to be when I grow up? At this point in my life, after teaching for seven years already, I’m hoping I can be a Mom when I grow up! My costume was made complete with apron, dish towel and baby doll.

Wednesday morning was Grandparents Day. We had a full classroom! I’m glad the grandparents came. I enjoyed having them there. They seemed to enjoy playing Skunk (our multiplication game) with us as well as listening to us sing our catechism songs. Sing the Faith is a great cd, by the way!

Wednesday night was our soup supper at church. I cooked a double batch of minestrone and coordinated soups and desserts with the rest of my class. Thankfully, I had a great group of parent helpers show up to help. We finished clean up just in time for Ash Wednesday worship.

Thursday was hat day. I was glad for a bit calmer of a day, although it was still a long one.

Friday was my favorite day – word day. This was a day I brought with me from St. Mark’s. We chose a word (adjectives are best) and dressed up as it. This year, I was authentic so wore my authentic German dress. Want to see? Here I am at school after our Word Day Parade.

Of course, there were still piano lessons to teach, papers to grade, grocery shopping to do, a house to clean and a book to read (for book club) this week.

I’d like to think that the weekend will be quieter, but that seems to be far from the case.

Today, Saturday, I have to be at Musical Arts Festival all morning before heading to Book Club this afternoon. This evening, the Concordia RF Kapelle Choir is singing at the Seminary. I’ll bring three college boys home for the night, even as my husband is off at his basketball lock-in.

Sunday morning, we spring forward, which will be particularly challenging as I have to have the boys across town at St. Paul’s by 7:45 in the morning with their packed sack lunches. I’ll go to church at St. Paul’s before heading to Ascension to fix lunch for the Kindergarten Round-up. Sunday evening, we’ll head to my in-laws for dinner.

Whew! Some weeks are just busy. Life is busy. I’ve learned that by now. Through it all, I’m learning more and more how to pray without ceasing. That’s a post for a different time, though!

I hope your week was a good one…and not quite as busy as mine!

Free Note Cards for Teachers

Do you remember when I earlier shared of the great offer from Tinyprints for teacher note cards? I’ve loved this freebie! I’ve redeemed it many times already. In fact, look what arrived in my mailbox the other day.

I opened the whole stack to see the cards I designed. There was a stack for me and for my husband.

Aren’t they cute? They printed nicely on high quality cardstock and each card was individually packaged.

You can stock up on teacher cards, too! Simply go to Tiny Prints and search for Back to School cards. You have 5 designs to choose from – all which can be customized.

When you get to the checkout, use the code APPLE2010. This code will subtract all the costs – including shipping. This deal is code through the end of October. You have another week to stock up on your own set of note cards!

There are some heart note cards which make beautiful thank you notes. I’ve made some of those as well. You could also make some thank you note cards with crayons for your children to use. Perhaps, you want to make a set for your child’s teacher as a Christmas present. There are so many uses to this freebie. Have fun creating at Tiny Prints!

Back to School Thankfulness

holy experience

Today I am back in the classroom – my classroom. Today I begin another year of teaching – my seventh. Today I welcome my students – all 24 of them. Today I start a new school year – a fresh start for us all. Today I am thankful for…

…first day of school anticipation.

…my own classroom where I can teach.

…my teaching talents, given to me by our gracious God.

…the blessings of Lutheran schools, where I teach and have been taught.

…the freedom to live and share my faith in the classroom every day.

…a full classroom of twenty-four third and fourth graders.

…the funny stories that my students give me.

…a husband who listens to all my teacher stories.

…supportive parents who entrust me with the education of their children.

…smiles from new students.

…hugs from old students.

…the return of a former student to my classroom. She’s grown a bit since Kindergarten and my name has changed since but I’m overjoyed to have Mary back in my fourth grade class!

…a wonderful summer vacation.

…sharing that wonderful summer vacation with my teacher husband.

…stacks of books to share with my students.

…new crayons and freshly sharpened pencils.

…a clean white board.

…songs to be sung with my students.

…having one year of multi-grade teaching experience now.

…a year stretching before us waiting for the days to be filled with learning moments.
