The temperatures are finally dropping in Indiana but sadly, still no snow. I grew up in Texas so I am well accustomed to winters without snow. Still, in all my years of living through Northern winters – in Nebraska, Ohio and Indiana – I’ve never encountered a winter with this little of snow. I’d really like at least one good snow! I’d like Andy to get a snow day (one of the best teacher perks) and I’d like Nathan be able to go play in the snow. I think he would really enjoy it. Here’s hoping!
Since I had a bit of room in my grocery budget left for January, I shopped a bit more at Meijer.
I wanted to pick up Gripe water before the baby was born. It was a life-saver for us when Nathan was a baby so I was determined to be prepared this time around. I also bought a pouch of berries and yogurt (on sale for $0.75) to put me over my Mperks baby reward for the month. I earned $3 back – to use in the future – this month on baby things.
I also picked up Velveeta to make queso dip for the Super Bowl. It was on sale for $5.99 and I had a coupon for another $1 off. Still pricey, but a fun splurge. Hillshire Beef Smokies were on sale for $1.67 (instead of $2.99) so I bought a package to make pigs in the blanket for our Super Bowl party, too.
I used an Mperks offer to get $0.50 off a big container of cottage cheese. Kraft cheese was on sale for $2 each and I had a printable coupon for $1/2. $1.50 per block of cheese is my stock-up price. Applesauce cups were on sale for $1.50 so I bought the last package of unsweetened ones. They make for a quick snack (that Nathan loves) when we’re out.
At Meijer, I spent $26.59.
I made one more trip to Kroger to take advantage of their mega deals.
I bought more Huggies wipes, at $0.99 a package (after sale and several printable $0.50/1 coupons). I realized it was time to start restocking my wipes for the new baby, too!
The Kotex pads were $0.49 each, after sales and coupons. Pasta was $0.49 and Goldfish were $0.99. I think Nathan will be getting a bag of Goldfish for Valentine’s Day. He does love those!
The Gerber graduate meals were $0.24 each (for the ravioli) and $0.33 each (for the mac and cheese). These were such a good deal that I thought it would be nice to have these quick meals on hand for Nathan once the baby arrives. Quick lunches are always in order then!
Finally, I bought some baby food as part of the mega deal. All Natural Beech Nut baby food was on sale for $0.49 a jar. Plus, there was a rebate on Ibotta that earned me $2.50 – meaning I paid less than $0.10 a jar. Plus, I was able to redeem them for bonus offers on Mobisave and Shrink, so the jars all became free and made me money. The expiration dates aren’t until late next Fall, so I went ahead and bought them to save for the baby.
If you’re interested in trying them out, the coupon apps I currently use include Ibotta, Checkout 51 (smart phone not necessary), Shrink, Mobisave, Saving Star and Shopmium (use code KGHYMUYQ for a free Lindt chocolate bar). I’m experimenting with all of them this year.
Milk was a dollar as were Mission tortillas. I bought 4 packages of Mission tortillas and will freeze some as soon as we get our new freezer. These are the closest to homemade tortillas I can find up North so always stock up when there is a sale.
At Kroger, I spent $17.31 – and earned several dollars in my mobile awards.
This takes my total for January to $241.17 – just over my new $240 budget. I’ll make up the difference in February! 🙂
To start off my February shopping, Nathan and I braved the cold on Wednesday and stopped by Meijer while we were out.
We are drinking lots of milk right now! Andy and I drink hot chocolate in the mornings (to get our calcium) and Nathan will happily drink milk any time of the day! He’s still drinking whole milk, while we drink skim. It was nice to see milk on sale for $1.99 at Meijer. I bought a big gallon of unsweetened tea, planning ahead to when my mother comes to help with the baby in April. Yes, it’s a ways away but the tea was on sale and I know my shopping times are more limited once the baby arrives!
I bought 3 pounds of gala apples for $3.99, and splurged on grapes at $1.89/lb. Nathan loves grapes but it’s been awhile since I saw them on any sort of sale. He was very excited to eat grapes again! Cottage cheese was on sale for $1.50 so I bought a container for him, too.
I bought English muffins at $1.50 to make mini pizzas for lunch. The big jars of natural’s tomato sauce were on sale for $0.50 – compared to the $0.44 price of the little jars. Obviously, I opted for the bigger jars! I restocked rice (2 pounds for $1.79) and cocoa ($2.69).
Finally, I restocked our Ibuprofen. All Meijer products were “Buy 1, Get 1 at 50% off”. I added the counts and figured out the best deal was to buy 200 tablets at $4 and get another 200 for $2.
At Meijer, I spent $29.46. With this being a short month (and the last one before baby’s due date), I have plenty of room in my monthly budget to do some stock-up shopping! Some of that will have to wait until after we go freezer shopping on Monday, though.
Did you find any good grocery deals this week?
