Spritz Cookies Recipe

Spritz cookies are one of those classic cookie recipes. I love spritz cookies. I always have and always will. It’s such a simple cookie but there is something about the simplicity of it that I like. That, and it’s the perfect shortbread type cookie.

One of the great things about spritz cookies is that they freeze perfectly. This means, you can make your Christmas spritz cookies early in November when you have a free afternoon. There’s nothing like being ahead of the baking game!

I was so excited to receive a cookie press for our wedding so I could make spritz cookies. If you don’t have a cookie press, there are many options available in a variety of price points. If you love spritz cookies, this is an investment you will want to make.

There are many spritz cookies recipes that you can use with any cookie press. I use this simple spritz cookie recipe and love the taste!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups flour

Directions:

In a mixer, cream butter with sugar. Add egg and vanilla. Add flour, one cup at a time until dough is mixed well. The dough will be soft but do not refrigerate.

Fill your spritz cookie press with dough. Follow the directions on your particular cookie press to make your  spritz cookies. Press them onto a cookie sheet, 1 inch part. Decorate with sprinkles or colored sugar, if desired.

Bake cookies at 375 degrees for 11 to 13 minutes or until firm. Cool cookies on the cookie sheet before removing to the cooling rack. This recipe yields 6 dozen cookies. Store cookies in an airtight container in the freezer.

  1. We love spritz cookies too in our family. I always use food coloring to make green trees and pink flowers. I prefer almond extract in mine. My cookie press is over 40 years old. I believe I got with Texas Gold Trading Stamps before I was married. I’ve never frozen my spritz. I should try.

    1. Almond extract is one of my favorite flavorings! I’ll have to try that sometime. And dying the dough is another simple way to jazz up these delicious little cookies. Storing them in the freezer does help them last a bit longer, I’ve found! 🙂
