Sloppy Joes – A Simple Classic

Sloppy joes is one of those recipes that everyone makes. I always thought it was funny that sloppy joes (Manwich) came in a can, because it is so simple to make a pot of sloppy joes. Everyone has their own twist on sloppy joes, but they are all similar. Hamburger, onions and ketchup are common ingredients. The recipe I currently use came from Arlys Staub, the mother of Andy’s best friend, Michael.

Whatever recipe you use to make sloppy joes, consider making a double batch and freezing some of them for a future meal. It’s one of those ideas to cook once for two meals – one now and one later.

Ingredients:

1.5 pounds hamburger
1 small onion, diced
1 teaspoon Worchestershire sauce
1/2 – 3/4 cup ketchup
2 teaspoon mustard
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1 can tomato soup

Directions:

Brown hamburger with diced onion. Drain the grease from the hamburger. Add in the rest of the ingredients. Stir together and simmer over low heat for 1 hour. Serve on hamburger buns for a classic sandwich.

If freezing, allow the mixture to cool and pour sloppy joes into a quart size freezer bag. Lay flat to freeze. This helps maximize your freezer space.

  1. My husband hates sloppy joes and even the title of the recipe “Sloppy Joes” would disturb him but I’m going to make it anyways, with a new title. He loves all the ingredients anyways and loves any kind of ground beef goulash. I’m just going to serve it over lightly buttered noodles. This recipe will give a different twist on his favorite fast and easy goulash… it needs an update!
