Homemade Chocolate Syrup

Growing up, I had a carton of white milk every day at lunch. It was 10 cents a carton and a good way to get our calcium. However, after so many years, I’ve learned I don’t really care for white milk. Still, I know I need calcium so I drink chocolate milk now. I figure the extra calories are okay since I am drinking milk. Right? Right.

Normally, I buy a chocolate mix but those can be pricey. When I ran out last time, I played around with making some mixes of my own. First, I tried a Nesquik type powder but it was only okay. It worked but I had trouble blending the powder into cold milk. It was decent, but after I made this chocolate syrup recipe, I knew that I didn’t want to make the powder again.

The easy chocolate syrup is much superior in taste. It is creamy and blends well into cold or hot milk. It has a rich flavor so a little goes a long way. Plus, it is very frugal. That’s always a plus! This recipe is from ""Amy Dacyczyn’s The Complete Tightwad Gazette.

As I like with my chocolate recipes, it is simple to make and comes from every day pantry ingredients. There are no artificial ingredients – only four ingredients that make combine to make easy chocolate syrup goodness.

This easy chocolate syrup recipe is now a staple in our fridge. It makes the best hot chocolate on a cold winter morning, too!

Add this recipe for easy chocolate syrup to your recipe file. Your kids will thank you for it…and if you’re a chocolate lover like I am? You can thank me later!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup water
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Mix the cocoa powder and the water in a saucepan. Heat and stir to dissolve the cocoa. Add the sugar, and stir to dissolve.

Boil for 3 minutes over medium heat. Be very careful not to let it get too hot and boil over! It is surprising how quickly it will boil up in these three minutes.

Remove from heat. Add the vanilla. Let cool. Pour into a clean glass jar, and store in the refrigerator.

This recipe yields two cups. It will last for several months in the refrigerator (if you don’t use it all before then).
