A Year of Jubilee

 Ellis Island

This summer, we visited Ellis Island. It was a moving and emotional day as we viewed the artifacts and stories of the over 12 million immigrants who came to our country.

So many people left all they knew and had to start a new life in America. Some left lives of wealth but many left lives of poverty. They were coming here for a fresh start.

It reminded me of the Old Testament instructions by God that every fiftieth year would be a year of Jubilee. The debts would all be forgiven and the slaves set free. Indeed, what a celebration to know the joy – the Jubilee – of returning to one’s family.

I think Ellis Island captures that Jubilee, as close as we can know here on earth. Yet, can you imagine the ultimate Jubilee we will someday know in heaven when we are united with our Lord and Savior?

Let’s live our lives overflowing with the Jubilee that comes from the source of it all – Jesus Christ!

  2. I haven’t visited Ellis Island since I was a child. I remember the very long spiral staircase all the way up Lady Liberty. I love how you correlated the immigrants to the Jubilee. Yes, I cannot wait for the Heavenly reunion!!
